It has been quite sometime since I last blogged about the Library's display. *feeling very guilty and dusting the cobwebs off* I have to admit that there were a few displays which had been put up but busy Azizah forgotten to snap a photo. Lets hope that she will not do that again. Nonetheless, I managed to captured the existing displays before they magically disappears to make way for new themes.
1) PLACES YOU WILL GO - This display was put up end of Nov 2014 before school closed. It was featuring the exciting destinations that I would likely go in the distant future (or maybe in another life). *Just kidding!!!* This display features several new travel guides that had been processed. There were more books when this display was put up. Looks like the patrons around here loves travelling (or like me, they simply dream to travel to those exotic places). 2) Reviving the Classics - Our collection has many books of a variety of genre. I simply picked out titles that were deemed to be classics from "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" (CALL no: 028.1). Titles by Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Bram Stoker and many more. From Nov 2014 to Mar 2015, I have been putting up the 19th & 20th Century classic literary works. 3) Gong Xi Fa Cai : Make sure you ram into a good book! - It is the year of a goat/sheep/ram. Those who were born in 1979, this year is your year. Look out for your good or bad fortunes on your favourite Chinese astrologer website. If the predictions are in your favour, then good for you. If not, take them in your stride and write down your bad fortunes on a piece of paper, fold them up and hang it up (somewhere). A way to ward off misfortune the Japanese way. It might or might not work. OR don't listen to my nonsense!!! *Back to talking about CNY display* This display featuring great books that are worthy to be listed by the 'GOODREADS' readers and I've picked out 4 lists that were interesting enough to gain my attention (so I hoped that it would grabbed the attention of the students too). Hey, it worked!!! Though I didn't specially checked that those books were borrowed out but there were eyeballs. Below are the lists and books featured: Scandalous books you cannot believe you read - Flowers in the Attic - Go Ask Alice - IT - Twilight - The Perks of being a Wallflower Controversial books that will get you thinking - 1984 - Lord of the Flies - A Clockwork Orange - The Catcher in the Rye - The Silver Linings Play Book Books with ending you honestly didn't see coming! - Divergent - Uglies - Goblet of Fire - Beautiful Darkness - Hex Hall Books you agree are infinitely better than the movie - The Gulliver's Travel - The Hunger Games - Harry Potter series - The Golden Compass - Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief 4) Valentine's Day : Fall in Love Again... - I love this display. Give me a romance theme anytime... A simple and not so fancy display that featured romance titles like star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet to hot romances like Twilight to complicated love like Jane Eyre to nursing a breakup like Incarnate. Using Adobe Fireworks, I put all the book covers on the heart template, printed it on Blockposter and put it out. I just have to make sure that the book covers are all in high resolution. 5) BOOKS ON SCREEN - This is yet another easy to put up display. Since I needed to refresh some of the boards, I cheated this time round. This 'refreshed' board is featuring literary works that had made it onto the screen (aka movie). All I needed were to cut out the headings for the board and then browse the shelves to pick out books that had been made into a movie. Our collection has plenty and I had a happy problem - my board cannot display all the books that I had picked. And so another reselection and this time I chose books with an attractive cover. If the books could speak, they would retort and accused me of being unfair. But sorry, I have to go with aesthetics. 6) International Women's Day 2015 : MAKE IT HAPPEN! - This year the IWD theme is "Make it Happen". Every year, I had to spend quite some time on this display. IWD would come up with different theme every year to celebrate women from different walks of life and made many sacrifices (see last year's theme). After much research, this year the board is featuring female authors who struggled, fought, work hard and persevere till they became successful and famous. From an unknown rejects to a literary darling who sold millions of copies (one of them is a Pulitzer award winner). I salute J.K Rowling, Agatha Christie, Judy Blume, L.M Montgomery, Beatrix Potter, Margaret Mitchell, Stephanie Meyers, Meg Cabot, Alice Walker, Audrey Niffenegger, Kathryn Stokett, Catherine O'Flynn & Louisa May Alcott. 7) 90 Years of GOOD Literature : celebrating T90 - It was book week and the Interactive & Reference Zone are collaborating to do up a libguide and a T90 Book Week Challenge for Year7 & Y8. It would be complete without a library display right? A board displaying books from the 1940 till 2010 have been put up. Jacqui had a list for the libguide and the book challenge, I just chose the ones that are available on the shelf. And I would like to thank Mr Ben Farr for sharing his resources and inspiration that partly contributed to the creation of this display. Upcoming display - At the present moment, there are a few themes to consider like National Poetry Month, Tribute to Leonardo Da Vinci, Library Week, Stress Awareness & Banned Books. And so I am #stillthinking...

Valentine's Day is coming soon and so the making of pop-up card, I decided to try out. Not bad for a first attempt.
As for the display, I played with large decorative font and a huge heart featuring the covers of romantic novels. This year's Christmas window display was rather another simple one. Most of the props were handmade, from the angel, the Santa and his sleigh (I cheated - these were from 2012 display) and to the tree with baubles (these are new!!!). It was easy to make the tree using a paper cone and the leaves were cut-out circles from green card. As for the baubles, these are cut-out circles from the pages of a weeded book. And they looked decent!
This is just an update of the Library's display before I went on my long maternity leave.
Copyright Day - This is a recycled display from last year. F1 Race 2014 - Showcasing books on the F1 History and its drivers. Year 7 Games @Lunch - A permanent display. Ace your Exams - Sharing tips on preparing for the upcoming exams. Bike Rush - We have quite a number of books on riding a bicycle and travelogues while riding. Highlighting books from the biography collection. POETRY Tree - Sharing poet of the month, Michael Rosen and his books. 100 years sisnce WW1 - Displaying books and poems pertaining to WW1. Mother's Day is around the corner (though it is just a month away). I thought that it is only right to put up a display featuring mothers (or mom or mama etc.) since most of us here in TLRC are mothers too (or soon to be mothers in the future). So I did some searching of strong book characters on mothers and I am very surprise with my findings. Search hits ranging from bad mothers to worst mothers and eventually to evil mothers topped the list while a list of good mothers were very few.
Though I have to agree that these notable bad mothering do mould the characteristics of the children in the book. Or it is just a way to make its readers feel more sympathetic and cherish their own mothers. Nonetheless, I have generated a list of books on the good, the bad and the mummy... The Good Ones:
The Bad Ones:
The Mummy (not a mother just mummy) - for trivia:
It was that time of the beginning of the month where all your display boards (almost all) got a make-over. A simple make-over in this case. Reviving the Classics Series: Comic Adaptation is the first installation for this series. We are trying to push out the classics collection. Reading the classics in comic is another way to entice the reluctant readers to pick up a range of reading materials (that is what I've read somewhere on the web). By featuring the examples of the books we have, I hope that the students would take notice. Fingers crossed. Below are the titles that we have in our collection.
The Iron Lady: It is the 1st death Anniversary of Margaret Thatcher. I didn't manage to erect a display for her last year due to the fact that I was running out of time. Thus, I make it a point to feature her this April 2014. It is quite sad that we do not really have a big collection about this powerful lady. Nonetheless, we do have a few books mentioning the Iron Lady (see the titles below). JM also suggested to post some thought-provoking questions about her; for example Was she a transformational leader?' and my favourite question, 'Do you think Britain is ready for another "Iron Lady" running as a Prime Minister in the future?'
OLE OLE Brasil Soccer Star Biographies: The football fever has yet to begin... I know but it is not too early to start the 'fever bug'. Moreover, I have one empty display board 'screaming' to be filled up. I had plans for this 2014 World Cup (can you sniff that another contest is coming?). I am quite excited about it but I will reveal the surprise only.... next month! This month's display is only featuring the soccer star biographies such as:
This last quarter of March was an exciting and busy time for me. I am rushing to put up and update my display boards and windows. It was an exhilarating time getting my mouse clicking and dragging the functions on the Adobe Fireworks. And gotten my adrenaline pumping to its max to prepare all the upcoming display planning and posters done (printed and framed; attached with a sample sketch) before I disappears for my maternity. I've even managed to plan several display themes and posters even for October 2014 (the time when I am supposedly to be back after a 4-month long maternity leave). I can't helped it, my creativity juice was gushing out like a fire hydrant (and I am on the roll). Well, I guess better get it done now rather than wait when I am out of ideas. It would then be so stressful. Furthermore, I would not know if the 'princess' suddenly wants to see the world. It could be tomorrow, or next week or .... (which reminds me that I better pack my hospital bag by tonight along with a very thick book to keep me company).
Nonetheless, below are the 2 displays which I've put up first. The rest of the displays would be updated once the photographs are in. Poet of the Month series: The month of April 2014, we will be featuring a poet, John Agard. Honestly, I simply adore my 'little boy beneath the tree' cut-out. It would be a pity to pull it down and furthermore, I would like to push out and 'move' the poetry collection. Therefore, I've decided to have a series of poet of month theme, highlighting poets from John Agard to Roger McGough to Michael Rosen. This series of poets display would be up and updated bi-monthly till November 2014. Below are some of the poet's books on display;
#currentlyreading #onschoolholiday Photo Competition: It had been quite sometime since the Library organised any contest. I was googling for a libguide maths content when I stumbled on an interesting Pinterest picture from several libraries in the US. Few weeks ago, JM suggested about organising some contest for the Earth Day. Frankly, there wasn't enough time to roll the contest out however, I had given the contest a thorough thought and started working on the #currentlyreading #onschoolholiday Photo Competiton instead. I would like to roll this out just in time before the April half-term break. Just a little something fun for the students to do and to do it with reading during the break. So there, #currentlyreading #onschoolholiday hash tags were born (actually, #currentlyreading hash tag has been around for ages. Therefore the #onschoolholiday hash tag was officially tweeted on 24th March 2014 by @LibraryTTS with the help of Mr Ben Farr.). Publicity had been put up all over the Senior Library, website, iSams and words had been spread to the Senior school English teachers (even to the Headmaster - I'm shameless, yes I am). So now, I just need to go shopping for those exciting prizes. *peace* PS: Now going to put up displays on the Iron Lady & Reviving the Classics series. Modern slavery is still happening around us and there are more slaves today than in the past. Slavery is not only found in history textbooks or work of fiction, it is a real issue; a serious problem. We have a libguide created for this and you could find out more in this link. I must thank the external parties like Hooi Geek (Attorney General Chambers library), the FB administrators from Emancipasia & Free the Slaves for their valuable pointers and resources. Since our Library has many biographies and true stories on modern slavery, why not have a window display just for that. Below are just some of the titles displayed:
Time just seemed to have passed by rather quickly this month (the fact that we only enjoyed 28 days in February this year). I have to say that it had been a very productive month throughout for me. Getting older, getting bigger and becoming more hungrier all rolled into one, didn't stop me from multi-tasking and juggling tasks efficiently - some people said that it might be because of the raging hormones of pregnancy. Well, it might be true - nonetheless, I felt very accomplished this month with the following tasks:
Don't you want to go and sit on one of the chairs? This space is so inviting and has a lovely atmosphere for learning. Any kid (or even an adult) would be so enticed to just be in the room. I have many praises for this room and I know you would too. Great sense of colours, layout and organisation which makes that space so in.... harmony. If I have my own small library to manage (in the distant future), I would totally borrow some of the design ideas from this room. I was lucky to stumble onto this site while I was looking for more ideas. I was working on how to beautify my games corner. It looks a little depressing now. Nonetheless, it is still work in progress. Oh well, just looking at this room makes me so excited and happy this morning. Inspiredinstyle.com - you've made it to my list of favourites (I am stalking you! - haha) Chinese New Year display/decoration is always a challenge. For a non-Chinese person, I think this is the best that I could put together. Initially, I was planning to do the display on the board just like last year. But it was so hard to find a nice looking image of a horse (based on my standard), unlike my hand-crafted snake which I've done last year.
So this year, I cheated! Instead of featuring the zodiac, I decided to do a general window CNY display instead (which I could recycle for next year) And used all the existing CNY props and bought a new red cloth (which it took me many weeks to get myself to buy). And hey, it turned out to be quite pleasing to the eyes. Now, where are those lanterns that I need to get someone to help me hang?! This blog of mind is collecting dust and cobwebs (remnants from the Halloween, I'd like to think). Looking at the blog entries by my fellow colleagues across TLRC had motivated me to write at least one entry this week.
Yes, I have been 'missing' for almost a month. Many apologies to all my colleagues who had been covering my duties, dolling up my babies (the display boards) and listened to my whimpering, ramblings and emotional cryings due to the 'monsters of the first trimester'. I would like to express my sincere thanks and I love you all. There is not enough words and gratitude that could measure the help you all have extended during that particular period of struggle. Nonetheless, I thank you very, very much! *just remember to pop around the pantry area and help yourselves to the goodies :)* Speaking of my babies (display boards), I am especially proud of this year Xmas and the Dr WHO boards. I had many plans but it didn't materialize due to my constant absence. I have an amazing team that put together these boards (looks like I could take an early retire! - just kidding). Xmas: Best board of the year! and Dr WHO: Best Group Collaboration (now where are the trophies?) Many people would agree with me. You are the best guys, you know who you are. I know some people have been hanging around my desk to get inspired. Hahaha! If you were inspired, then that's good. Otherwise, try this, window shopping. Now, feast your eyes to the award-winning boards in its own right. A tribute to those who had theirs hands involved: A sharing platform for those who are creating display boards for their Library. From one library officer to another... These are the 2 displays that I blogged about earlier.
1) 10 Books Must Read Before They Hit The Big Screen - This 'baby' of mine was conceived before the recent Summer break (2013). It took a great deal of searches from the Internet, YouTube and a BBC News & Entertainment clips. I am excited with this topic as they are 5 movies which I am definitely going to be watching in the movies. There are more titles that didn't make it to the board as we haven't buy them yet e.g. The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort (starring Leonardo DiCaprio), Serena by Ron Rash and Horns by Joe Hill (starring Daniel Radcliffe). Back to the movies I wanted to catch - a) City of Bones (must watch as if you are a Twilight & Harry Potter fan) b) Divergent (if you like the Hunger Games series and hungry for more such movies) c) Hunger Games; Catching Fire (if you have watched Hunger Game and also a fan of Jennifer Lawrence) d) The Book Thief (it is a big hoo-haa claiming that it is a good book) e) Nelson Mandela; A Long Walk to Freedom (he is a World icon, it would be a pity if you missed it) I would suggest that you to watch Invictus - 2009 biographical film (starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon) too. 2) Make Your Mark; with International Dot Day - This particular display is a challenge. It is to celebrate the creativity that inspires. This is an initiative made inspires from a lovely picture book entitled The Dot by Peter Reynolds. We only have one copy of the book. It took me a day to put this up. The display featured the book itself on how creativity was born and how one could inspires others by passing on the act of encouragement. It is a beautiful story with lovely illustrations. I suppose it would be a great gift to any child and people who keep inspiring others. I would like to dedicate this board to all of those people who inspires me - you know who you are! And I thank the boss who linked me up with this website and suggested to do something about it. Display-In-Progress: Halloween *peace dot* This new term would be a very interesting term for the 'Director of Display' (just joking). Well, it is interesting for me because the Library has a line-up of topics to be featured. The above are just a few displays that I managed to put up almost instantly. I have another 2 more displays on my desk that is waiting to be put up.
1) In Memory of Seamus Heaney - The late Mr Heaney is recently deceased and JM pointed out that the Library should do a display for him. Since we have many poetry books by him (a well-known and loved Irish poet who ever won a Nobel Prize), I made used of the existing poetry display and added one of his poetry. The poem was extracted from one of his books, Death of a Naturalist, 2006 (ISBN 9780571230839) using Fireworks. 2) On the Go; Audio Book Collection - This display is to feature our audio books. Just like last year's On the Go display, I am into the audio books display. I don't know why I am into this display. Maybe it is the fact that not many people know that we have the collection or it was because I had a feedback from a parent inquired about it on Day 1 of the display. I must say that I beamed like a 'proud mama of her new baby' (and I could still feel that same beam.. heehee). Like the poetry display, I recycled the lizard poster I used last year and improvised a bit using props from the Art Department. I am happy with the look and the presence of the display. Maybe we could invest some $$ to print a proper quality poster. 3) World Architectural Day 2013; Celebrating Beautiful Libraries - This one is a real challenge for me. It took me weeks of production from the concept thinking to the actual pasting. The official website only features the conference and the seminars just like the IFLA WLIC 2013. So after days of going through the websites and hitting the NF Art collection in search of inspiration, I stumbled upon an interesting article about a bookstore in an old cathedral. Using this inspiration, I googled about beautiful libraries around the world and got myself to create this beautiful display. I didn't put all the libraries so I pick and choose some of the libraries I like. My favourite (the one I've enlarge the photograph) would be the Delft University of Technology Library in the Nethelands. What's yours? 2 more displays are pending to be put up - International Dot Day; Make Your Mark and 10 Books to Read Before They Hit the Big Screen. And one more to be in the making - Halloween. I have a confession to make! After almost 2 months of not doing any display, my cutting skills and creative juice have run dry. It is so hard to get started and decide on what concept, colour scheme, content etc to be put on display. So I cheated a little for this display. I re-used some of the images displayed for the same theme last year like the car and the checkered boxes. I threw away the letterings and replaced with a new one (have to thank Atiqah for introducing me this cute and user-friendly online software ipiccy). The software has so many beautiful and creative fonts to choose from. And so, I used the one that looked like tiny lights. Though it didn't look very alluring on the board as I thought it would be. As for the content, I have 2 ideas to work with. 1) To hold a poll on student's favourite team/driver and 2) to show the champions of the 2013 F1 championships on the World map. So I chose no 2 because based on last year's experience, students' participation is not very encouraging. (I am still working on that - though QR codes are around in the library but students don't seemed to be using them). It is quite difficult to find a suitable World map. I have to take into account of the colour, resolution, file size, quality of the images. Next challenge is to plot the champions on the map (their photos in the countries which they had won), look at the display and you'll see what I mean. It is also to brush up on your geography skills. You would want to check the atlas if you think I have plotted wrongly - Concise Atlas of the World (Ref 912). So who do you think would be the champion for the F1 Singtel Singapore? I bet it would be Sebastian Vettel. It must be Sabestian Vettel because to date, he has won 4 championship and also he happens to be my all-time fav driver. |
